The boys in one of our Saturday groups call themselves the Funky Ducks. Together, they wrote their own anthem: “We Put the FUN in Funky Ducks!”
They are five neurodivergent boys who travel from different parts of Sydney each week to participate in Group Music Therapy at Sound Expression.
Through regular sessions, they have developed collaboration skills, peer connections, emotional regulation and shared responsibility within a group setting.
As part of their work together, they composed an original song titled “We Put the FUN in Funky Ducks!” with support from their music therapists Rob Devlin and Iani Sujono. The lyrics reflect the values they are have practising and internalising:
- Working together as a team
- Understanding that co-operation is key
- Listening to one another
- Keeping each other safe
- Being positive role models
The song has become their group theme and is sung at the start of sessions — reinforcing identity, belonging and shared achievement.
The Funky Ducks are a strong example of how group music therapy can support social development while allowing young people to express who they are — confidently and creatively.
