It looks like play.
It’s so much more.

At Sound Expression, we use music to support communication, connection, participation and capacity building in ways that feel natural, motivating and aligned with real-life goals.

Music becomes a way to express what’s hard to put into words. To navigate daily life with more confidence. To feel grounded, heard, or to simply connect with another person.

Our sessions are personalised, responsive, strengths-based and designed with NDIS goals in mind, especially capacity building. We focus on what matters most to each person and use music to help them move toward it, one beat at a time.

It started with one room.
And a belief that music could do more.

Iani had worked for years across early childhood and disability services, including schools, community groups and private practice.

She saw how much children responded to music — but also how often it was treated as an add-on, not a core part of therapy. Rob came to music therapy after a career in marketing, drawn to the idea that music could create meaningful change across all kinds of lives and abilities.

Together, they wanted to build something different. A dedicated space where therapy could be creative, consistent and centred on each person’s strengths. In 2015, they opened Sound Expression in North Ryde.

One room. One therapist. A place where music therapy could be delivered with purpose and heart.

That one room has grown into a dedicated clinic. It’s now home to a highly skilled team of Registered Music Therapists and a strong community of families who return week after week, year after year.

Today, Sound Expression is known for therapy that’s both evidence-based and deeply human. Sessions are personalised, interactive and adapted in real time, because no two clients are the same and progress doesn’t follow a script.

Here, therapy doesn’t just tick boxes. It builds trust, celebrates strengths and helps people feel seen.

And the coffee shop next door? That’s for the parents and carers, because they deserve a breather too.

What guides us

Sure, we’re AMTA-registered. But we’re not just clinical, we’re deeply personal.

Empathy
first

We meet people where they are, emotionally, developmentally and on a personal level. No two journeys are the same and that’s exactly how we approach therapy. Everyone deserves to feel seen, safe and supported.

Qualified, registered,
respected

Every therapist on our team is university-trained and AMTA-registered. But more than credentials, we bring clinical skill with genuine care. Using evidence-based music therapy to support connection, confidence and everyday capability.

Therapy that builds
over time

We believe in steady progress and small wins. A shared look. A new sound. A first turn taken. These are the moments that matter.

Real relationships matter

Families trust us because we stick around. Many of our therapists have been here for years and that consistency makes a difference — in outcomes, communication and confidence.

Purposely creative

Yes, we sing and play — but every beat, every pause, every musical shift is purposeful. We use music flexibly to support things like regulation, communication, sensory integration and social skills.

Honest conversations

We believe in open, real, respectful dialogue — whether we’re talking about progress, funding, or what’s working best. Because clarity builds trust and trust supports better therapy.

The little moments
that change everything.

We’ve written songs about brushing teeth, crossing roads, and ‘walk not run’ for shopping centres. And when those songs come home with families, when they’re used at school or to start the day, that’s when therapy becomes real-world support.

We’ve had parents tell us their child smiles more after sessions. That they handle transitions better. That they feel heard. That they’re proud of what they can do.

And we’ve heard it from adults too, that music therapy has given them something to look forward to, and a way to reconnect with themselves.

What happens in music therapy doesn’t stay in the session. It flows into the day-to-day — and often, into the relationships around it.
