We’re excited to share a glimpse into some of the great moments from one of Nolan’s music therapy sessions. Nolan is a young adult who has a rare diagnosis Xia-Gibbs Syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder which affects brain and nervous system function, causing physical and intellectual disabilities.
Nolan attends music therapy with his music therapist Sebastian for several reasons, including supporting his emotional regulation skills and increasing his positive social engagement with others in his life and community. He is supported by his support worker Livian, with whom he feels highly comfortable because of her deep understanding of his needs.
Initially preferring his own company and refusing to engage socially with others, Nolan has gradually lessened his resistance to participating in various activities during his music therapy sessions. He has now developed a stronger relationship with Sebastian, which has further assisted his engagement throughout each session – whether that be choice-making, improvised or structured musical participation or simply feeling comfortable with the flow of the session.
In this session footage, Nolan had just returned from an extended absence. Nolan was eagerly anticipating the session and was excited to greet Sebastian, shaking his hand as they headed into the music room.
Watch how Sebastian & Livian collaborated together seamlessly to create an environment where Nolan could thrive. Sebastian identified the optimal musical beat and rhythm that resonated with Nolan, while Livian’s encouraging cheers helped boost Nolan’s confidence and mood. This collaboration enabled Nolan to reach a higher level of participation and engagement.
Thanks for sharing your awesome music with us, Nolan!
